How to Clean an Office Chair?

Whether you're working from home or in a cubicle, desk work means you're sitting in a chair most of the day. Food, ink, or drink accidents happen every once in a while and you definitely have to clean them up. The upholstery may also need a general cleaning over time, and if your wheels aren't rolling properly, they might as well.

Grab as many solids as possible with paper towels and dispose of them in the trash. You may need to do this several times to completely remove the solids. If cleaning chairs with fabric upholstery, it is important not to rub when cleaning; you may force solids into the fabric and make it harder to clean.

It's important to act as soon as you see the mess so there's no time to set it up.

The faster you can deal with a spill, the less likely it is to set and cause a stain. If you're going fast enough, you should only need to dampen a cloth or rag with water. Use it to blot up as much liquid as possible. Wring out the liquid in a separate container or sink and keep blotting up the spill until it disappears.

This label provides cleaning instructions directly from the manufacturer. If you see an S, only use solvent-based solutions to clean the chair. AW means you should use a water-based solvent, while SW or S/W means either solution can be used.

Any product containing water may damage the upholstery. There are many brands of cleaners, and you should always check the directions that came with the product. Some come in liquid form and some come in powder form.

In either case, you'll want to apply a small amount of solvent to a dry cloth and blot the stain.

Make sure to use a damp cloth to blot up the solvent, or it may leave a ring on your upholstery.

Mix mild dish soap with water and dampen with a clean cloth. Blot the stain with a cloth. Be careful not to rub the stain, or you could damage the upholstery, especially if it's made of fabric or microfiber.

Dampen a cotton ball with a few drops of rubbing alcohol. Test the alcohol on a small, invisible spot on the chair, such as the bottom. If no damage has been done, use a cotton ball to wipe up the stain.

Mesh trim tends to fray if rubbed too quickly. Make sure to be more gentle on these surfaces.

Do not use rubbing alcohol on acrylic fabric trim.

Rubbing alcohol is just a little water, and you can use it on S-coded upholstery. When in doubt, apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to a small, inconspicuous spot of the upholstery. If it's not damaged, you should be able to use rubbing alcohol.

Start with the trim attachment, which has a wide plastic end and brush underneath. The brushes are soft enough not to scratch leather and vinyl upholstery. Sweep the vacuum across the chair's seat, back, and armrests.

After inspecting the trim with the trim attachment, you can use the crevice tool to cover hard-to-reach areas.

Make sure the suction is not too strong, as this may damage the leather upholstery.

Use natural, biodegradable dish soap for soap. Be sure to test the solution on a small, inconspicuous spot of the upholstery; this is the only way to be absolutely sure the solution won't damage it. Depending on the material of the upholstery, the composition of your solution will vary.

For fabric, vinyl, or leather upholstery, mix a few drops of soap with 1 cup (240ml) of water.

Make sure to use a clean, lint-free cloth. Wet your rag instead of soaking it; you don't want to leave too much cleaning solution on the upholstery. Be careful not to rub or scrub as this may wear down the mesh or scratch the leather.

Wipe off any water or soap residue and let the chair air dry. Put the chair in a well-ventilated area. This will make it dry faster.

You may find it easier to work if you sit in a different chair. You'll avoid bending over all the way, which protects your back. Some wheels will pop out with pulling, while others may require the use of a screwdriver.

Whether it's dry food, trash, or even small pebbles, anything can hinder the movement of your office chair. The butter knife slides into the gap between the wheel and the cover, allowing you to scrape or pop any debris stuck on the wheel.

If there are hairs stuck in the wheel, cut them with scissors and remove them with tweezers.

This should take care of any mess you can't scrape off with a butter knife. If the wheels are particularly dirty, dampen the cloth and apply a few drops of dish soap.

If you need to clean between the wheel and the cover, you can use a cotton swab dipped in water to clean along the gap.

Any moisture remaining on the wheel will prevent it from rolling smoothly. Wipe the wheels down thoroughly with a paper towel, especially if using soap.

Your chair should now roll more smoothly. If the wheels have screws, remember to screw them back in before sitting on the chair.

Since these parts are usually plastic or metal, they are easier to clean than the upholstery of a chair. Wiping with a damp cloth is usually enough to clean them. If the spill is a bit stubborn, use a mild solution of water and dish soap.

After cleaning, dry your arms and legs with a clean dry cloth.
